| A PENSIONER
was handed a holiday hamper last week at her Salisbury nursing
home, thanks to a charity that provides help for those connected
with the military. Elsie Hand (92), of Inwood House nursing home
in Bellamy Lane, was one of 16 chosen in the Salisbury district
by the Soldiers,
Sailors, Airmen and Families Association to receive a hamper.

| It was presented to Mrs Hand
by her SSAFA caseworker Hazel Lee. Mrs Hand was chosen because
a SSAFA caseworker had visited her for the past 16 years. When
her husband, who had served in the RAF, died, the charity continued
to visit her at the nursing home.
A SSAFA spokesman said: “The hampers are delivered not
only by our caseworkers but also by friends, especially where
the latter have established a close friendship with the recipient.
“
The recipients are selected on the recommendations of caseworkers — trained
volunteers who visit individuals in their homes.”
The hampers’ contents range from food, wine, Christmas
crackers and confectionery to pot p1ant and toiletries, and are
assembled to meet individual’s needs and enjoyment.
SSAFA began giving Christmas hampers to people in south Wiltshire
four years ago, after it received financial support from the
Nationwide Building Society and money from its own fundraising.
SSAFA is a voluntary organisation, which helps men and woman
connected with the military might have fallen on hard times or
who might be on their own.
